What is ESA SOLARIS?
ESA SOLARIS is the European Space Agency's preparatory initiative to study the feasibility of space-based solar power as a potential European energy and industrial option. Initiated around 2022, SOLARIS involves technical analysis of SBSP system architectures, assessment of European industrial and technology capabilities, economic modelling, and engagement with European Union energy policy bodies. SOLARIS does not represent a decision to build or fund an SBSP system. It is a study program designed to give ESA and its member states an evidence base for deciding whether to invest further in SBSP technology development. ESA has framed SOLARIS as a response to the European energy policy context following the energy security challenges of the early 2020s. SOLARIS outputs include technical reports and workshops. Claims about SOLARIS conclusions, commitments, or project status should be verified against current ESA publications.
