UK Space Energy Initiative
The UK Space Energy Initiative is a consortium of UK industry, academic, and policy organisations formed to assess and advocate for Space-Based Solar Power as a potential contributor to UK net-zero energy goals. The initiative gained significant visibility following the publication of a major Frazer-Nash Consultancy feasibility study commissioned by the UK government in 2021, which concluded that SBSP was technically feasible and potentially cost-competitive with other low-carbon energy sources under certain technology improvement scenarios. The UK government's subsequent interest led to further studies and parliamentary engagement. The initiative brings together companies including Airbus UK, BAE Systems, and numerous smaller firms alongside academic researchers. A conceptual SBSP architecture called CASSIOPeiA (Constantly Angled, Sun-Synchronous InfiniTe Orbit) was developed within the UK programme and differs from conventional geostationary designs by proposing a sun-synchronous orbit that maintains continuous solar illumination without the large reflector structures required in GEO concepts. UK government funding for SBSP studies has been acknowledged in national energy strategy documents. The initiative has not yet resulted in a funded flight programme; activities remain in the feasibility, concept development, and industry mobilisation phase.
